More Adventures with Atton

On the edge of Lincoln, a field has been lined with torches and music is filling the summer air.

Will grins at Atton, "Thought there'd be some music."

Atton would move back a little, but that would be rude.

"Why's that?"

"Cause dinna get 'nough interestin' folks like ye 'ere."

"I'm not that interesting."

"Aye, ye are, ye're tall an strong an carry tales on ye. Tell me o'where ye're from."

Her hand wanders to where the scar on his shoulder is.

Ah.

Atton's not sure how to describe a bi-seasonal planet in a binary star system, where the suns can't be seen on account of the unique properties of the thick clouds that cover the planet, and where there are no herbivores - only carnivores and photovores - to somebody from medieval England.

"It's snowy. Or it is most of the time, but sometimes the snow melts and makes huge great rivers where there used to be valleys. The lands are divided up amongst various clans - there are about a dozen - and mine is one of the larger ones, and one of the more warlike ones. Pretty much everyone there is dark-haired and tall - I'm actually kinda considered short by the standards of my people."

"An 'ow did ye up so far from there?"

He sounds like he must be almost like the Vikings from far in the North where its cold and snowy.

"Yeah. Far up North."

Atton hears that Earth has a cold North and a warm South, after all.

"Is yer friend a Vikin'?"

"No, just descended from them."

"Oh aye."

The music starts to slow and she moves closer to him,

"Does someone wait for ye somewhere in the cold?"

"Yes, yes, someone does. You know, it's a shame Will didn't fight. He's good, y'would've liked him."

She pouts and moves slightly away from him,

"Oh aye?"

"Yeah." Beat. Panic. "You weren't expecting more, were you? I was told the dancing was just dancing without," awkward handwave, "things attached."

She flushes and moves farther away from him before turning on her hell and leaving with a flourish of her hair,

"I'm na like that."

Atton considers.

He may have to slap Will upside the head.

Not that Atton's whole 'hey, dancing might be fun!' idea was a good one in the first place.

Will is enjoying a drink and gives Atton a grin from where he's sitting on the supplies they picked up.

Atton gives him an accusing look as he approaches.

"You said the dancing was just dancing! Innocent dancing, with no expectations that it was a prelude to anything less innocent."

"Depends on the girl is all. Why?"

"It was not all innocent on her end, and now she's all angry and embarassed," Atton says, sitting down next to Will and reaching over to take his drink. "What else is there t'do at this fair?"

"Ye've seen most o'it an wasna on purpose."

"Fighting, markets, and dancing? Well, the fighting has probably stopped now, so markets and dancing."

"Aye, could 'ead back to Sherwood. Glad ye 'njoyed the fightin'."

"Yeah, it was fun. Your world's good for fighting - Guppy's isn't, because it's against the law, and Guppy doesn't like me breaking laws."

"Oh aye, 'e's good 'bout followin' rules."
