Recovering Part 4

They find a door somewhere near 71st street and Will steps through to the Bar. He takes the bag of clothes and gives her a long kiss before leaving her to her teammates.

Inside, he gets a sandwich and drink from Bar to take upstairs as he looks in the bag and laughs at the Hawaiian shirt.

Upstairs, he puts on the speedo which makes him feel rather naked but it made Kate speechless which is worth a lot. Contented for the moment, he settles down on the bed to eat and soon naps after he eats.

When Kate returns he's stretched out on the bed in just the speedo, a trail of red hair leading down to it and a drink and sandwich on the bedside table.

"Aye, scared me 'ow ye didna get angry an missed yer passion."

He kisses her gently and looks into her eyes,

"We all 'ave our darkness, Kate."

"That alone should have said that something was wrong."

Kate glanced back at him, "I know, got a close look at mine. She even taunted me at times about it."

Her first words make him flinch slightly but its not worth arguing about so he runs his hand through her hair and looks away for a moment before meeting her eyes again,

"Aye, but ye've a strong light to ye, Kate."

She drew her arms around to embrace him, "Why I didn't end up like Brand. Even though Bleys said he had his for hundreds of years."

Kate then wondered, and asked, "Will? When did you first know, when it wasn't me?"

"Na sure if there was any particular time guess when ye started forgettin' things an growin' cold."

Kate sighed at that, and then demanded, "That long? What did you think was going on? Just the spell? She was taking over me, Will. I was vanishing that whole time before she locked me up completely."

He runs a hand through his hair and tries to hold onto his temper,

"I was askin' an wonderin' but na gettin' any answers! I fought for ye an with ye much as ye'd let me!"

Better than her temper right now as she angrily replied, "I told you! She'd hurt me or threaten your lives every time I tried to tell you! Anybody! I had to fight her regularly just to not lose ground."

"Then dinna act surprised if ye both 'ad me tricked cause ye couldna tell me what to do! Also if ye 'avena forgotten, I was off figthin' in bloody Kashfa!"

She flinched a little at that.

"I didn't mean that part... just when you did see me. I thought you'd know me enough to know... But even my friends couldn't tell either."

She moved away from him, and curled up on the bed more before sniffling, and punching the mattress with the side of her balled up hand. Repeatedly.

"I was worried an tried to aid ye much as I could an ye'd let me! I took on Brand for the Good Lord's sake cause 'e'd bloody bespelled ye."

He stands up but doesn't go far just leans against the bed.

Kate was quiet a moment longer, and then went to get up.

"I need to step out." Nightgown or not, she felt like hitting something.

Now he sinks down on the bed with his head in his hands,

"Aye, I'll be 'ere, 'member yer robe dinna wish to catch cold."

"Cold... right. Whatever." She barked back sharply, and headed out anyway, slamming the door behind her.

The footsteps started to retreat, but then a short way down the hall, there was a noise of a person slumping to the floor. And then loud thumps against the floor.

And brief choked back sobs.

He trembles for a long moment, he hates this so much and finally gets up to stand and opens the door.

When he sees her in the hall, he stops and isn't sure what to so stands there, trying to will his hand to stop shaking.

She was slumped on the floor, her legs partially drawn up. One arm was over her face so as to hide the fact that she was crying while her other hand thumped against the floor. Repeatedly. She was also shaking as she sat there.

He slides down the wall next to her and takes her hand that's thumping the floor to kiss her knuckles,

"Kate, I wish I could 'ave saved ye all this pain but I didna know 'ow."

Before she had been murmuring, "Don't let it destroy you, don't let it destroy you, don't..." But it was cut off when he took her hand, the knuckles now looking abraded and bruised.

She finally said, "Because I couldn't let you in...Didn't fight hard enough for that."

"Shh, ye fought with all ye 'ad, 'nough is a dangerous word. Should get some ice for yer 'and."

With careful kisses he finds each hurt and then turns her palm over to kiss it.

Kate nodded, and curled up against him.

"I need to get to bed. Long day. You're not carrying me though, your side can't take it."

"We'll lean on each other an I'll read to ye."

He hugs her and wraps her in his arms as he starts to stand up, he's not letting go.

She allowed him that, leaning lightly against him as they go back into the room.

"All right, something happy or funny."

He nods and closes the door behind them as he finds The Wonderful O on the nightstand,

"We'll try this one, ye get comfy."

Kate glanced over at it, and then moved the covers so they could get underneath. She climbed into bed, and settled in against the pillows on her side. She yawned, and her eyes briefly closed before opening again.

With only the bedside lamp on, he reads to her the simple story, sometimes stroking her hair or back and as he gives her worried glances.
