Recovering Part 4

They find a door somewhere near 71st street and Will steps through to the Bar. He takes the bag of clothes and gives her a long kiss before leaving her to her teammates.

Inside, he gets a sandwich and drink from Bar to take upstairs as he looks in the bag and laughs at the Hawaiian shirt.

Upstairs, he puts on the speedo which makes him feel rather naked but it made Kate speechless which is worth a lot. Contented for the moment, he settles down on the bed to eat and soon naps after he eats.

When Kate returns he's stretched out on the bed in just the speedo, a trail of red hair leading down to it and a drink and sandwich on the bedside table.

He trembles for a long moment, he hates this so much and finally gets up to stand and opens the door.

When he sees her in the hall, he stops and isn't sure what to so stands there, trying to will his hand to stop shaking.

She was slumped on the floor, her legs partially drawn up. One arm was over her face so as to hide the fact that she was crying while her other hand thumped against the floor. Repeatedly. She was also shaking as she sat there.

He slides down the wall next to her and takes her hand that's thumping the floor to kiss her knuckles,

"Kate, I wish I could 'ave saved ye all this pain but I didna know 'ow."

Before she had been murmuring, "Don't let it destroy you, don't let it destroy you, don't..." But it was cut off when he took her hand, the knuckles now looking abraded and bruised.

She finally said, "Because I couldn't let you in...Didn't fight hard enough for that."

"Shh, ye fought with all ye 'ad, 'nough is a dangerous word. Should get some ice for yer 'and."

With careful kisses he finds each hurt and then turns her palm over to kiss it.

Kate nodded, and curled up against him.

"I need to get to bed. Long day. You're not carrying me though, your side can't take it."

"We'll lean on each other an I'll read to ye."

He hugs her and wraps her in his arms as he starts to stand up, he's not letting go.

She allowed him that, leaning lightly against him as they go back into the room.

"All right, something happy or funny."

He nods and closes the door behind them as he finds The Wonderful O on the nightstand,

"We'll try this one, ye get comfy."

Kate glanced over at it, and then moved the covers so they could get underneath. She climbed into bed, and settled in against the pillows on her side. She yawned, and her eyes briefly closed before opening again.

With only the bedside lamp on, he reads to her the simple story, sometimes stroking her hair or back and as he gives her worried glances.

She gradually drifted off to sleep against him. But the earlier stress kept it from being a restful one yet. She whimpered, and then her body went tense as she cried out in pain. In her dreams, she was now remembering how it felt to have the demon torn out of her, and she startled herself awake again, breathing heavily.

The light is off but he's not asleep, his arms around her and his green eyes on her,

"Shh, ye're safe."

She shuddered, and clutched back at him.

"I remember... Felt icy, like something walking over my grave and then this sudden deep loss. Something reaching in, and tearing that demon out. I was gone, but still remember it now."

All the pain he's gone through doesn't compare to this so he hugs her even tighter, not quite having the words to help her.

The fact he's not sure what to say is even harder so he buries his face in her hair as he hugs her as tightly as he can.

She's quiet again, and just hugged him back tightly. Light tremors briefly ran through her frame. Some time later, she felt tired enough to sleep again. This time, it was more restful with forgettable dreams.

It takes much longer for him to sleep as he watches over her but in time he does though his dreams are restless as he never lets go of her.

She snuggled closer in her sleep, almost nuzzling him as she slept by him.

He wakes up first as the morning light creeps into the room and looks down at her, not wishing to disturb her.

Her features were slack with sleep now, her chest gently moving up and down as she breathed deeply.

As the light moved across the bed, it reaches near her eyes, and she slowly wakes up. She rubbed the sleep out of her eyes, and then glanced over at Will.

"Morning... and I'm sorry."

He moves her hair off her face and kisses her forehead,

"Morn, na sure if ye should be 'pologizin'. I just kept sayin' the wrong thing."

"No... I... I just hoped you, everyone would be able to figure it out without me telling you. That you'd just somehow know."

"I knew somethin' was wrong but knowin' didna really do any good in the end."

She sighed and shook her head.

"No it didn't. The other Amberites could only delay it a little."

"Forgive me, Kate, would 'ave done more if I could."
