A Burning

In the early morning, guards come down to grab Daiki, stripping off most of his clothing and hauling him upstairs.

There's an eerie quiet in the morning, Nottingham has never been known for burning witches, more for hanging outlaws.

Daiki gives them a long-suffering sigh as they drag him along.

"You know, if you're going to strip me, you may as well go to the next level and show me a good time, too." Beat. "Frankly, it's rude not to."

A guard hits him across the face, "Silence, witch!"

Daiki recoils from the blow, grimacing.

"Now you're just getting predictable."

Outside the hallway, more guards are waiting and they move up the stairs towards the castle courtyard.

"So, what are your hobbies?"

The question makes all the guards look at him strangely and one asks,

"'obbies, like a 'obby 'orse for the dancin'?"

"... Sure, why not."

"Where do ye 'ide it?"

He must be a powerful witch.

"In my mouth," Daiki says, solemnly.

The guards meet gazes, and one of them thwaps Daiki as they finally reach the courtyard. There's a pile of wood stacked around a pole and a decent sized crowd has gathered, the Sheriff is watching from one side of the courtyard.

"You're very violent people," Daiki remarks mildly.

"Ye're a witch!"

Then the guards start pushing him towards the stack of wood, but one of them notices that his chains are facing the wrong way. This might need some work, they tend to hang people not burn them in Nottingham.

Daiki waits while the guard works on the chains. When they're loose enough, he slips out of them and quickly elbows the guard in the face.

It doesn't take much to take the other guards around him down, and then he runs for it.

Now he just needs to get past the main gate out into the town or find another exit, because the Sheriff was presiding from the main gate. When he breaks free, the guards yell and other guards start to run towards him.

Daiki can run fast, so he heads for the main gate, keeping ahead of the guards behind him. When a guard approaches him from the front, he just somersaults over him and continues running.

As he somersaults, another guard tries to hit him down with a pike as more guards try to move in front of him to block the gate as the Sheriff yells.

Daiki dodges the pike and drops down when he reaches those two guards, sliding along the ground, hopefully catching them off guard enough that they won't think to strike down there and he'll get away.

Past the guards, the main gate is bolted but the inset door is closed but not locked. The guards aren't quite sure where to hit at him so strike near him but not at him.

Daiki rolls to one side, landing in front of the door, and pushes through it.

The town is quieter than the day before but there are still people moving about.

Also there are a few figures who are keeping to the shadows and when Daiki appears through the door, there's a hand on his shoulder and a voice whispering,

"This way."

Daiki doesn't bother asking: That can come later. He just follows the voice.

He's led through back alleys to a small gate and the figure slips out with him,

"Just keep movin', ye're a stranger so they'll na 'xpect ye to dare Sherwood."

As they move towards the forest, he'll notice that his companion is a large man wearing a cloak and soon another lither figure joins them as they pass under the trees.

"You're the outlaws, I suppose?" Casually.

From Nottingham, the sounds of horses being gathered can be heard and yelling as they go deeper into the forest, "Aye, didna catch yer name."

The bigger man asks at the smaller one stays on the edges, making sure they're not being followed.

"Kaito Daiki," Daiki says lightly. "Yours?"
