Jun. 15th, 2007 09:29 pmSince the funeral, Nottingham is on edge, work needs to be done in the fields and everyone waits and watches for the first blow.
It falls unprepared, a man at arms argues with a carter near the market, in a moment of anger, his whip curls through the air, a dangerous crack on the chainmail.
Then there is only action, as two horns sound, the clear bell of the man at arms and the haunting cry of an outlaw's horn.
Battle is begun in the streets as families hide in their homes and swords, staffs and any weapons ring out, steel to steel, confusion reigns.
It seems to go for hours and seconds until archers appear over the castle keep and men fade away into the streets, as the men at arms hurry inside, barring the gate.
No clean victory for either side as good men fell, but the Sheriff has learned, when you strike us, Nottingham will rise with Sherwood.
