Adventures with Atton Part II

Will and Atton are on the road to Lincoln, its been raining through the morning but its cleared up and Will is grinning,

"Just 'membered that they're 'avin' their Fair so should be some fightin' for ye."

"Aye, na 'alf as bad."

Will still pulls up his hood as they enter.

Atton doesn't. He's less well known than Will, after all - he knows he should be cautious in Nottingham, but Lincoln less so.

"Good. Should be fun, then. What should we do first?"

Soon they're in the midst of an active and busy market,

"Find when the fights are 'appenin'."

"Yeah. I'd like to get some meat and vegetables and stuff for more cooking, so fighting early seems like a good idea - money to buy stuff, then, since you'll be able to pickpocket people easy-like."

"Oh aye, 'specially if they're watchin' ye fight."

Its not too hard to find the small platform where the fights are going to happen, there's a line of men already there.

"I wonder if I can find out and arrange a fight with the best guy here," Atton says. "S'would be good if I could."

"If ye keep winnin' should end up fightin' the best."

"S'true that," Atton says, grinning. "So, how do I do this, do I get into line, or ... ?"

"Oh aye, same as in Nottingham."

One of the other men in line, who's rather wide gives Atton a look over,

"Ye think ye'll win?"

"Well, I can try," Atton says. Grinning: "Why, y'think I won't?"

Will grins and slips into the crowd as the man postures a bit,

"Skinny thing like ye, nay."

Atton watches Will slipping into the crowd out of the corner of his eye.

"Dunno about that. I have muscles," in a lean, lanky sort of way.

"Oh aye, but na like mine. 'rhaps I'll get to pound ye."

"Perhaps. Not sure you could catch me, though - how fast are you?"

Atton hopes he's fast, but that's mostly just because he hopes most of his opponents are quick enough to keep up with him, or faster.

"Fast 'nough. Ye got a name?"

"Doran," Atton says, chirpily. "Have you?"

"Aye, I'm Alf."

In a few moments, Alf signs himself up for the wrestling and nods to Atton with a smirk as the man at the table looks,

"What's yer name an what kind o'fightin' ye wish to do?"

"What options are there?"

"Wrestlin' or staff, also tis archery but ye're na an archer."

"How can you tell?" Beat. "Oh, and wrestling. Are there any rules?"

"Ye've na bow an na many."

"What rules are there?"

"Na bitin'. Ye 'ave a name that I should put down?"

"That's the only one?" Atton is surprised, though not displeased. "Doran."

"Ye want more? Doran, aye. Will be called from 'ere when its yer turn to fight, couple o'round dependin' on 'ow many folks an winner gets a purse."
