He'd left a note for Merlin though he wasn't sure when it would ever be received.

Fairly simple just saying we need to talk and I'll be around and in this clearing whenever you have a moment.

Will doesn't want this talk to happen in the Bar and the forest outside might not be Sherwood but it does feel safe in a way, he knows his way there.

So everyday for a week, he's been outside in that clearing going through his sword forms, each day he's a little less sore but it still hurts.

And the day after the week is up, because Merlin doesn't pay much attention to time outside his realm, Will can has a tall, darkhaired king leaning againts a tree and watching the workout.

"You rang?"

He finishes the form because Robin told him to never leave things undone and salutes Merlin with his sword,

"Aye, I dinna understand 'nough, Merlin an wish to do all I can."

Will's about half a year over eighteen but he doesn't look it with the worry and pain weighing on him.

"Understand enough about what?" He straightens up and dips his head in acknowledgement of the salute.

The sword is sheathed and Will leans against a tree before he answers,

"What's in me Kate an why would Doc be 'nough o'an ass to go off with Brand?"

"What?"

Will is talking from behind his hands, its easier that way.

Well actually its not but he's afraid to meet Merlin's eyes since he feels that he's failed him as he's failed so many before,

"Wellington saw it. Went off o''is own damn will!"

There is another spate of silence from the Lord of Chaos, physical movements as casual as if they were discussing the weather.

However, "I never thought Jo would be that stupid." Merlin's voice carries a trace of sorrow.

"Thought the same 'bout Kate but can 'e bespell 'em to believe 'im bit more. Played on 'er doubts."

Will's voice maybe pleading slightly but he doesn't care, he saved Doc from the gallows.

Merlin is silent again for a long time.

Then: "I'll do my best to get them back whole and alive. But if that's not possible, Will ... do you want them possessed and alive, or cured and dead."

He doesn't want to answer that question, not truly so he stares out for a moment, looking too old,

"Canna choose life or death for 'em, na truly. Up to 'em na me."

"Then I will do my utmost to recover both of them without bloodshed. But I can't absolutely promise I can, Will."

"We all carry scars, inside an out, least can aid each other an 'ealin' with 'em."

Merlin studies him.

"Some scars can't be healed."

His gaze is seeing something in the darkness and he shivers,

"Nay, they canna but can share the dark."

"I know Kate is your light against the darkness, Will. I'll do my damndest to get her back to you."

Merlin doesn't have a light.

"Tis all I can ask. Let me buy ye a drink or share a bottle or somethin'."

"Yeah, ok. A pint or twelve of something."

Beat.

"We'll trade buying."

"Will work well 'nough then."

He's slow to head in but does, finding a quiet booth and ordering a nice bottle of fine whiskey. When it arrives he pours out the shots and makes a toast,

"To the sun risin'."
